Brain dead youth gives lease of life to 6

MADURAI: A 21-year-old man, who was declared brain dead at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai on Wednesday night, gave a new lease of life to six patients, as his heart valve, liver, kidneys, and eyes were harvested for transplantation.
S Suresh, who hailed from Tirunelveli, met with a road accident near Ramanathapuram on March 19, after a car in which he was travelling collided with a truck.

Suresh incurred severe injuries and was immediately rushed to GRH for treatment. However, he was declared brain dead by the doctors on Wednesday night.
After getting consent for organ donation his family members, required procedures were carried out and Suresh’s organs were harvested. Post the harvesting process, the heart valve was sent to Madras Medical Mission, the liver was sent to Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre, one kidney to Tirunelveli Medical College and the other kidney at GRH itself. Both the eyes were also preserved at GRH.
According to sources, in the accident, a total of four – including Suresh – out of seven people who were travelling in the car were killed and three others were receiving treatment.
